To the topic, studying abroad, what do I need to know when I study in another country?
What is with my health insurance here in Germany?
My name is Andrea Schaller.
I'm from the public health insurance TK here in Germany.
TK is the biggest health insurance in Germany that we have, and we have a lot of students
as customers.
This is why we have students advisors like me, and we help the students to get all the
needed information that they have to know, need to know, want to know.
My contact details are at the end of the presentation.
If you have any further questions, you can also contact me, no matter what health insurance
you have.
Yeah.
Okay.
First of all, when you study, how are you injured abroad?
When you are enrolled in Germany, for one or more semesters, this insurance will be
still valid and needs to be active.
Even if you are not in Germany.
When you are enrolled in Germany and you decide to make an Erasmus program or other semester
in another country, then normally you are still enrolled.
When you are still enrolled, then normally also your German health insurance is still
active.
Even you don't need to have it or it's not valid in your country.
Other situation would be when you, for example, make your bachelor here in Germany and you
make a complete master program in another country.
Then this is another story, but if you are completely enrolled and you decide to go for
one semester or two semesters in another country, then normally you are still enrolled.
In this case, your health insurance in Germany needs to be active.
What kind of health insurance can you have?
You can have a public health insurance as a family member.
This is possible until the age of 25.
You don't need to pay the contribution normally.
You are injured with your parents.
This is possible for all those students where the parents live here in Germany.
It's also possible if you are married.
Then it's also possible.
You can have a normal public health insurance as a student by yourself where you pay your
contribution by yourself.
Or you can have a private health insurance.
The public health insurance, no matter if you have the public health insurance with
your parents or you have it by yourself, as I mentioned, this will be active and this
needs to be active.
So unfortunately, if you have it by yourself, you have to pay it.
Then you can't use it because it's not valid in the other country, for example.
If you have a private insurance, then you need to contact your provider and ask them
if the country that you want to visit is included or if it's possible to make an extra contract
and add this country to your contract.
So this was the bad news.
So if you are in Germany, you are enrolled in Germany, you have to have your German health
insurance even if it's not valid in the country you want to study.
For example, when you are from Europe, when you study in Europe, then your health insurance
